Date: June 3rd, 2018
Location: Garrettsville, Ohio
Race Type: Spartan Sprint
Length of Race: 4.0 Miles
This race was fun! It took longer than anticipated unfortunately. I ran this race with my brother Ryann and his wife Allison (more on that later) and we started at 9:45am. This was day 2 of the Ohio beast and sprint weekend. My brother Ryann and my best friend Zach and I ran the beast the day before on Saturday the 2nd (see Ohio Spartan Beast 2018). So before the race even started my muscles were dead, I was sore, I was tired, my ankle was throbbing, and my elbow could barely move. Ryann and I ran this race without our water packs because it was only 4 miles so we didn’t need them and there were water stations along the way.
Ryann and I had signed up to run months before the race. Allison decided late Saturday night that she wanted to run too. She was able to pay at the gate on Sunday and race. Now she did this with NO TRAINING. She is going to school for dance and claimed that she would do just fine and that she may struggle with upper arm stuff but everything else was fine. Let me take a second to warn anyone who wants to do a Spartan Race that TRAINING IS A MUST. If you are doing a sprint than jog a couple times a week for 6-8 weeks before the race, and do some pushups and sit ups and chin ups each week, it doesn’t have to be intense, 4-hours-a-day, heavy lifting training, but it has to be something.
We started at a very descent pace, I think it was close to 10 min/mile average even with obstacles, but we didn’t go more than a mile before Allison couldn’t run anymore. Ryann and I were running and we would keeping passing spots where on the beast the course would turn off and go for another couple miles before meeting back up. To us it felt like we were flying through the course just because we were hitting obstacles early in the race that we didn’t see for hours during the beast. One of the best parts of the sprint was that we got to skip the 2 miles (maybe 2, maybe 1.5 I’m not sure…) of hip deep swamp that we had to go through during the beast.
Overall I really enjoyed the sprint. It was a nice change of pace from the beast. I recommend everyone try a sprint because my first sprint really got me hooked and now I can’t seem to stop doing spartan races.
